I suspect there is a strong element of Calvinist determinism - the elect are pre-ordained for heaven and deserve their success in this world and the next. Biography of John Rockefeller (the first, who made all the money) is interesting (among other things) for his deep-seated belief that he deserved his success not just for his business acumen but also for his character and faith (apparently sharp business practice was not unchristian in his lexicon).
